Miley Cyrus might get criticized for her wild behavior, but she does occasionally use her celebrity to try to change the world for the better. According to a Jan. 7 report by MTV Style, she recently encouraged her fans to get behind the fight for gay rights by rocking a pro-gay marriage shirt.
The shirt in question was a Marc by Marc Jacobs tee featuring a drawing of a lesbian couple along with the words, "I pay my taxes, I want my rights." Weirdly, one of the lesbians in the drawing looks like Kellan Lutz's long-lost sister.
Miley Cyrus hasn't been shy about showing her support for gay rights in the past. She even got an equal sign tattooed on her middle finger to symbolize her love for the LGBT community. She doesn't talk about issues like gay marriage a lot, but she probably decided to silently make a statement about it now because of what's going on in Utah.
The MTV article about Miley's shirt has a title that reads, "Miley Cyrus Gets Political With A Marc By Marc Jacobs Tee." Words like these are part of the problem. The fight for gay marriage shouldn't be about politics—it should be about human rights. Gay couples in Utah have had a lot working against them in a state where religion plays a big part in politics, and they were just dealt another bad hand when the Supreme Court ordered a halt to the slew of same-sex marriages that were taking place in the state after a federal district judge's surprising decision. Perhaps Miley's was showing her love for those who were hurt by wearing the gay marriage shirt.
Miley also recently tweeted something that might be a response to "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson's homophobic comments. In case you don't recall, he used his faith as an excuse to criticize gay men during an interview with GQ (since he was so focused on anal sex, it doesn't sound like he has as much of a problem with lesbians). Miley retweeted a message by comedian John Fugelsang that read as follows:
Jesus was a radical nonviolent revolutionary who hung around with lepers hookers and crooks; wasn't American and never spoke English; was anti-wealth anti-death penalty anti-public prayer (M 6:5); but was never anti-gay, never mentioned abortion or birth control, never called the poor lazy, never justified torture, never fought for tax cuts for the wealthiest Nazarenes, never asked a leper for a copay; and was a long-haired brown-skinned homeless community-organizing anti-slut-shaming Middle Eastern Jew.
Since the tweet references Jesus not being anti-gay, it's seems very possible that Miley had Phil Robertson on her mind when she retweeted it. After all, the "Duck Dynasty" debacle was such a big deal that anyone who spends a lot of time on Twitter had to be aware of it. Or maybe Miley was just sending a message to the religious right in general (when she wags her tongue, the world takes notice).
What do you think of Miley's recent pro-gay rights tweets?
