Portugal's qualification for the Brazil World Cup was not only a sporting success for Cristiano Ronaldo, but also a financial one. A great deal of money depended on the Portuguese star's presence in Brazil, because he negotiated receiving 60% of his image rights as part of his new deal at Real Madrid.
Not qualifying for the World Cup would have meant a serious setback to several different advertising campaigns already underway ahead of the next summer's huge footballing event. Having now sealed qualification, the numerous marketing manoeuvres carried out by Cristiano Ronaldo - who will probably arrive at the tournament with the Ballon d'Or under his arm -, look likely to go ahead.
Real Madrid is also celebrating Cristiano Ronaldo's qualification for the World Cup in Brazil. It was crucial for the Bernabéu club that its star player be present at the most important tournament on the planet, especially considering that Gareth Bale missed out on a place at the tournament and that Barça's star players, Messi and Neymar had already qualified.
Real Madrid was terrified by the possibility of not having either of its star players at the World Cup, whilst Barça showcased two of the world's best players in Brazil. That would have been a serious blow to the club's international image.
