Nine weeks after “Royals” first made its way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Lorde is stillreigning supreme at the no.1 spot. The 17-year-old New Zealand native now holds a record with a number of other females who have also held this feat, including Debbie Boon with “You Light Up My Life”, Ashanti with “Foolish”, and Carly Rae Jepsen with “Call Me Maybe”.
Lorde, aka Ella Yelich-O’Connor, recently sat down with VEVO for their Lift series to talk about what inspires her lyrically. “Royals” was taken from an image she saw with the phrase written over it, thinking it was gorgeous, while the line “We’re driving Cadillacs in our dreams” was taken from her childhood diary.
Many wonder if Lorde can hold on to her fame or if she will be considered a one-hit-wonder as time goes by, but by the way her lyrics are hitting home with people, she has some true staying power. Time will tell if Lorde will remain on top of the Billboard Top 100 chart.
