A single game was enough for Leo Messi to put the fans back in dreamland and hush the critics. Gone are the suggestions that he is out of form. Now the talk is about him possibly breaking into the top three of La Liga's all-time goalscoring charts this very week.
Messi has racked up 225 goals in 262 appearances since making his debut in 2004, putting him just two behind Di Stéfano (227 in 329) and three behind Raúl (228 in 329). Considering the Argentine's bent for bagging hat-tricks, it wouldn't be much of a surprise were he to surpass the two Real Madrid legends this coming weekend. That would leave him adrift of only Hugo Sánchez and Telmo Zarra, who scored 234 and 251 times respectively.
There is a widespread acceptance that Messi will smash these marks sooner or later and the only question is whether he will jump to the top of the list this campaign or not. The Barça man currently lies 26 goals behind the Basqueman, who plundered his haul at an incredible rate of 0.91 goals a game across 15 seasons at Athletic de Bilbao.
Messi has scored a paltry - for his standards - 11 league goals this term, on top of six in the Champions League and four in the Spanish Cup.
