AT LEAST 27 DEAD: Tragedy strikes Egyptian football once again

At least 27 people, according to the morgue personnel, have died in clashes between ultra football fans and police in Cairo prior to a match between local teams Zamalek and ENPPI.
Another 30 people were injured in the violence that broke out when police prevented fans from entering the Air Defense Stadium in the east of the Egyptian capital.
The Egyptian Ministry of Interior released a statement to say that supporters of both teams had tried to force their way into the stadium, reportedly without tickets, which had been limited to 10,000. The police were consequently obliged to intervene to prevent these people "damaging public property".

Official sources added that the football supporters had set fire to a police vehicle and officers responded to arrest those responsible for the attack. Tear gas was also used by security forces to disperse fans.
The radical group of supporters took to their Facebook page to accuse the authorities of having surrounded the gates with barbed wire to prevent access and of throwing tear gas into the crowds which led to fans fainting and experiencing symptoms of suffocation.
On 1st February 2012, 74 people died and 254 were injured in clashes inside the Port Said Stadium between supporters of the local club Al-Masry and Al-Ahly fans.
