LIGA HASN'T HAD TOP THREE EQUAL ON POINTS SINCE 82-83 Neck and neck...and neck!

For years, the Liga has been a toss-up betweenReal MadridandBarcelona. This season, however,Atlético de Madridhas joined in the fight, who is still a major contender despite its last two results. The three clubs are joint league leaders on points, although Barça sits at the top spot thanks to goal difference.

We have to go as far back to the 82-83 season - more than 30 years - to see the same situation. Then, it was between Barcelona, Real Madrid and Athletic de Bilbao, the three teams equal with 33 points. In the end, it was the Basque club that won it, by just a point.
To find the closest-run league decided on in the last game between three clubs, we have to jump back a decade more to the 70-71 season. Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid were playing against each other in the last game, both up for the title. Unfortunately for them, they drew 1-1 and Alfredo di Stéfano's Valencia cheekily pipped them to the post.
For the Barça players, regaining the Spanish league leadership after last week's defeat is a great reassurance and confidence booster for the clashes to come: "Getting the leadership back is important for us. It gives us confidence for the next games", Iniesta assured.
Andoni Zubizarreta also remarked on the Liga at the top: "Nobody is leader on Saturday, nor have they won the Liga in February. La Liga is very long", he warned.
