Celebration: Palestinians celebrate Gaza 'victory' following peace deal

Palestinians in Gaza have celebrated a self-proclaimed 'victory' over Israel with fireworks and street parties after the announcement of an open-ended ceasefire in the seven-week conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced calls to resign amid strong criticism in his country's newspapers this morning over what was widely seen as a failure to destroy militant group Hamas.

It was argued by Israel's leading commentators that in agreeing to a truce following the most prolonged bout of Israeli-Palestinian violence in a decade, Netanyahu had made his country look weak and had effectively encouraged future attacks by other militant groups in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, on the battered streets of Gaza today, Palestinians were able to visit shops and banks and resume the normal pace of life as the Egypt-mediated ceasefire held throughout the morning.
