Heightened precautions are being brought in at terminals around the UK amid reports two terror networks are working together to produce a new bomb to bring down a jet.
US officials believe the groups may be putting together a 'stealth device' which could be undetectable to current security checks.
It is feared the new explosives - which may have been tested by militants fighting in Syria - could be non-metallic or surgically implanted inside a terrorist's body.
ABC News quoted a US defence insider as saying the new threat is 'different and more disturbing' than attempted attacks in the past.
The increased security warnings from the Department of Transport and Downing Street came as millions of holidaymakers prepare to embark on their summer breaks.
The new security measures are believed to include more searches and closer scrutiny of personal electronics and footwear.
