The Lagos State governor Babtunde Raji Fashola has inaugurated and renamed the 2.1km Ejigbo-Ajao Link Road in Ejigbo LCDA to "January 27 Link Bridge" in memory of January 27 2002 Ikeja bomb blast victims.
The governor after observing one minute silence with guests express disappointment over the Federal Government negligence before and after the incident. He said the blast which claim the lives of over 1,000 people was preventable if the government led by PDP has not gone to sleep. He said "men, women and children perished in the Oke-Afa canal because a national government led by the Peoples Democratic Party failed to do its duties. There is no other excuse for it. That was their responsibility to manage bombs and explosives and to look after the Nigerian military, but they dropped the bombs". “Since then, they have pretended as if nothing was wrong”...
The governor said his administration intervened in rebuilding schools and hospital around Ikeja affected by the explosion. He also said “My predecessor promised you that day that a bridge will be built to link Ejigbo to Ajao Estate. I have come here today to fulfil that promise”
On road rehabilitation in Ejigbo, Fashola berated the Federal Government for turning a blind eye to roads in the area, which according to him were damaged by the activities of oil tankers lifting fuel from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s depot in Ejigbo.
“It shows the kind of respect and concern that the party that manages the Federal Government has for you; they will come back to you and ask for votes”, Fashola stated.
